An irritable man with two noisy daughters of primary school age and a wife who gets on his nerves pretty much goes to visit an elderly mother with whom he has a strained relationship. All around one continuous stress. So also some freak first makes him drag along the lane between the roadside and the convoy of truck, and then catches up at a gas station to give a lecture on braking distance and demand some kind of apology. Not having received these, but having received an angry tirade in the face, proceeds to more decisive and frightening actions. Namely - it ominously pursues with unkind purposes.
Steven Spielberg once started with a similar plot, in which in the film "Duel" a monstrous fuel truck mercilessly drove a small car with the main character behind the wheel on the highway. Traffic maniacs are an integral part of American culture. They inhabit a small area at the intersection of the borders of two larger areas, conquered and exploited by this culture: one of them is occupied by a huge ramified network of desert roads, the second is actually maniacs. The most notable representatives of this endemic species are stuntman Mike from Death Proof and John Ryder from The Hitcher, we all remember and love them dearly.
But "Pursuit" is by no means an American movie, but a Dutch one, and therefore, given that the Netherlands has never been famous for either maniacs or deserted roads, the road maniac takes root here with difficulty. He is simply cramped in a densely populated territory and attempts to create favorable conditions only lead to the fact that the created conditions look artificial. You have to resort to all sorts of tricks at every step, to force someone to commit idiotic acts, and to ignore the options adequate to this or that situation.
At the same time, the maniac himself is discharged great. This is a completely ordinary-looking, gray-haired law-abiding European, whose law-abidingness goes far beyond. His motives are about the same as those of the guys who sculpt stickers on the windshields of randomly parked cars, but the methods are much more radical. He uses a spray bottle filled with caustic chemicals as a tool and drives one of the most popular vehicles in Europe, a white German van. The perfect combination of inconspicuousness and the abyss of horror hidden behind inconspicuousness.
The preponderance, that is, clearly in favor of the murderer - against the background of blatantly dull children and adults, he looks especially advantageous - and it is not a fact that this happened unintentionally. In the end, if someone had obeyed the traffic rules, if he had been more polite, nothing bad would have happened. Which, of course, does not in any way justify anyone, but translates the film into the category of moralizing parables.
